Former Fort Lauderdale publisher Thomas O'Donnell dies

Thomas P. O'Donnell, who led the the Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Sun-Sentinel as publisher and chairman during his 40 years with the Tribune Co., died Sunday at his Hinsdale, Ill. He was 77.

O'Donnell served as publisher of the Sun Sentinel for 10 years, beginning in 1983, according to the paper, then served as chairman of both the Sun Sentinel and the Orlando Sentinel.

The Sun Sentinel also credited its printing plant, which opened in 1989, as part of O'Donnell's legacy.

O'Donnell's career with Tribune began in the classified advertising department in 1955, according to the Associated Press. He was named general manager of the Chicago Tribune in 1981.

The Sun Sentinel said services in Illinois and a memorial in South Florida are expected.
